Artist Statement
Although Jacky is a certified art teacher and is heavily influenced by late 19th century and early 20th century art, her work is still mainly exploratory. She has found that she enjoys making objects equally as much as creating drawings and paintings. She does not have a theme she sticks to nor a larger purpose is trying to convey. Her work has as little or as much meaning as someone wants to attach to it, but she mostly tries to make things without too much planning or deeper meaning. Throughout her career she strives to hold onto her exploratory and playful nature and remember not to take herself too seriously. As she discovers new parts of her surrounding world and her life changes, she want her art to shift as a reflection of herself.
Teaching Statement
"I always had inkling that I would become a teacher one day. I have always had a knack for being able to explain and teach people new things, and I enjoy it. My childhood friends probably still carry the awful memory of how I used to invite them over, only to play “school”, a game that involved me teaching them a variety of subjects from math to art, complete with worksheets that I had created for them to solve and fill out and for me to grade. The teacher in me has always been there, but the art teacher in me just reared its head a few years ago when I was at a crossroads in life. After a lot of thought, it finally clicked in my head that I could marry two of the things that meant so much to me to create my future career. I had always loved art class in my K-12 years, but I felt that nearly all of my art teachers had been too restrictive and not engaging, except for Mr. Sale. Mr. Sale was my high school art teacher and one of my goals is to have a classroom environment like his. There was no stress, minimal restriction, and no nitpicking.
I refuse to be the passive teacher who simply instructs and then sits behind their desk and answers emails while students work quietly. I want to be a part of the environment I create by working alongside or guiding students all throughout class. I also want there to be a collaborative and social nature where students can talk to each other about their work if they choose. I want to create a structured space with the least amount of artistic restriction possible, rather than be the person who decides what ideas are worth creating ."
